Monsignor George Jacob Koovakkad, originally from Kerala and a dedicated priest of the Syro-Malabar Church, was elevated to the esteemed rank of Cardinal by Pope Francis on December 8, 2024. The ceremony, held at the Vatican, aligned with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a sacred day in the Catholic faith.
Born on August 11, 1973, in Thiruvananthapuram, Koovakkad hails from the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Changanassery, a diocese celebrated for its vibrant Catholic heritage. Ordained in 2004, he ventured into the Vatican Diplomatic Service in 2006 after graduating from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. Over his illustrious career, he served in Apostolic Nunciatures in countries such as Algeria, South Korea, Iran, Costa Rica, and Venezuela. Since 2020, he has been stationed at the Vatican Secretariat of State, overseeing Pope Francis’s global travels.
His cardinalate is a landmark moment for the Syro-Malabar Church and Indian Catholics worldwide, exemplifying the Vatican’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive leadership. At just 51 years old, Koovakkad stands among the younger Cardinals, eligible to participate in the election of future Popes, highlighting his significant role in shaping the Church’s future direction.
